Shutter Nonsense is currently operated by Michael Rung and Jeffrey Tadlock. References in this Privacy Policy to “Shutter Nonsense,” “we,” “us,” or “our” mean Michael Rung and Jeffrey Tadlock acting together under the Shutter Nonsense brand.

We are based in Fort Worth, Texas, United States. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and retain information through www.shutternonsense.com and the forms, newsletters, comments, workshop services, and other features that we control.
 

This policy does not apply to websites or services operated separately by Michael Rung, Jeffrey Tadlock, or other third parties, even when we link to or embed those services. Those services are governed by their own privacy practices.

Information You Provide Directly

Depending on how you interact with us, you may provide information such as:

• Your full name, including forms where a last name is optional.

• Your phone number, when you choose to provide it.

• Your workshop interests, waitlist selections, and registration information.

• The contents of messages, inquiries, comments, and other communications you send to us.

• Newsletter subscription choices and consent records.

• Information contained in documents or files that you send to us by email or through a feature we may offer in the future.

Workshop Registration and Participant Information

We collect workshop information in stages. A general inquiry or waitlist signup normally requires only basic contact and interest information. If you move forward with registration, we may collect additional information reasonably needed to administer the workshop, process payment, communicate with you, meet permit or service-provider requirements, support participant safety, and provide appropriate accommodations.

Depending on the workshop, this may include:​

Please provide only information that is reasonably necessary. We use sensitive workshop information only for workshop administration, safety, accommodations, emergency response, insurance, legal, or related operational purposes. We do not use that information for unrelated marketing or advertising.
 

Payments and Invoicing
 

When workshop payments or invoices are offered, they may be handled through third-party providers such as Wix Payments, PayPal, QuickBooks, or another payment or invoicing service. We do not receive or store your complete payment-card number. We may receive limited transaction information, such as your name, contact information, payment status, amount, date, invoice details, and other information needed to maintain business and accounting records.

Comments and Public Content

You may be able to comment on articles without providing an email address. We collect the display name and comment content you choose to submit. Comments and other content posted in public areas may be visible to anyone, so do not include information you want to keep private. Wix and related service providers may also process technical information associated with your submission for hosting, security, moderation, and spam prevention.

Future Alumni Community and Upload Features

As of the effective date, we do not offer user accounts or a private alumni forum. If we introduce a workshop alumni community, member accounts, private messaging, file uploads, or similar features, we expect to collect information such as login credentials, profile details, posts, comments, messages, uploaded content, and moderation records. Any future alumni community will be limited to people 18 or older. We will update this Privacy Policy and any related terms before those features launch.

Information Collected Automatically

When you visit the website, Wix, Google Analytics, and other website service providers may automatically collect technical and usage information. Depending on your consent choices and the tools active on the site, this information may include:
 

• Internet Protocol address and information derived from it, such as approximate location.

• Browser type, device type, operating system, language, and screen characteristics.

• Referring website or campaign information.

We have disabled Google Analytics user-provided data collection and do not intentionally send names, email addresses, phone numbers, workshop health information, or other directly identifying form data to Google Analytics.

Email Engagement Information

Website, Hosting, Analytics, and Communication Providers

We use service providers such as Wix to host and operate the website, manage forms and contacts, provide email marketing, support comments and future community features, maintain security, and provide analytics. We also use Google Analytics for website measurement, subject to the site’s consent settings.

Payment and Invoicing Providers

When payments or invoices are used, information may be processed by Wix Payments, PayPal, QuickBooks, banks, card networks, or other payment and accounting providers needed to complete and document the transaction.

Workshop Partners and Service Providers

We may disclose limited participant information to co-instructors, guides, lodging providers, transportation providers, permit agencies, land managers, insurers, emergency responders, medical personnel, or other service providers when reasonably necessary to operate a workshop, satisfy a requirement, provide an accommodation, respond to an emergency, or protect participant safety.

Embedded Media, Social, and Affiliate Providers

When you interact with embedded media, social platforms, Patreon, affiliate links, or other third-party services, information may be transmitted directly to those providers as described in the section above.

Professional Advisors and Legal Requirements

We may also disclose information when we reasonably believe it is required by law, legal process, a government request, an insurance obligation, or to protect the rights, property, safety, or security of Shutter Nonsense, our participants, our visitors, or others.

Information may be transferred as part of a merger, formation, reorganization, financing, sale, transfer of assets, dissolution, or similar business transaction, subject to appropriate confidentiality and legal protections.

With Your Direction or Consent

We may disclose information when you ask us to do so, authorize the disclosure, or when we provide a separate notice at the time of collection.

We do not sell personal information for monetary compensation. As of the effective date, we do not disclose personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising and do not provide identifiable contact information to unrelated third parties for their own direct marketing.

5. Email Marketing

Joining the Shutter Nonsense email list is optional. A general contact form may include a separate, optional checkbox allowing you to request newsletter subscription. We currently use double opt-in, which means you may be asked to confirm your subscription before marketing emails are sent.

You can unsubscribe at any time by using the unsubscribe link in an email or contacting privacy@shutternonsense.com. Unsubscribing from marketing does not prevent us from sending nonmarketing messages related to a workshop registration, payment, transaction, safety matter, legal notice, or an inquiry you submitted. After you unsubscribe, we may retain limited information necessary to document and honor your opt-out request.

6. Cookies and Similar Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies to operate the website, remember choices, secure forms, understand website use, and support embedded services. Some cookies are essential for the website to function. Analytics, marketing, and certain functional technologies may be optional and may depend on your consent.

7. Advertising and Conversion Measurement

As of the effective date of this Privacy Policy, we do not use Google Ads conversion tags, Meta Pixel, remarketing tags, customer-list advertising uploads, or other advertising pixels on the website. Google Analytics user-provided data collection is disabled, and we do not currently use Google Analytics data to create advertising audiences or personalized advertising campaigns.

We expect that we may use Google Ads, Meta advertising, conversion measurement, remarketing, or personalized advertising in the future to promote photography workshops. Before activating those tools, we will update this Privacy Policy and our Cookie Policy, revise the cookie inventory and consent settings as needed, and provide any choices required by applicable law. Marketing technologies will be tied to the appropriate consent category where required.

If we later use contact information to create advertising audiences, enhanced conversions, or similar services, we will provide additional notice and any required consent or opt-out rights before doing so.

8. International Visitors and Processing

Shutter Nonsense is based in the United States. Our service providers may process or store information in the United States and other countries where they operate. Privacy and data-protection laws in those locations may differ from the laws where you live. Where applicable, we and our service providers use measures intended to support lawful international processing and transfers.

9. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy. Retention depends on the type of information, the reason it was collected, the sensitivity of the information, and legal, tax, accounting, insurance, contractual, safety, and dispute-resolution requirements.

Our general practices include:
 

• Google Analytics user-level and event-level data is configured for a retention period of up to 14 months. Aggregated reporting may remain available for longer periods within Google Analytics.

• Newsletter information is retained while you are subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we may keep limited suppression information so that we can honor your request.

• Inquiry, customer-service, and workshop-interest records are retained for as long as reasonably useful to respond, maintain business history, and manage follow-up communications.

• Workshop registration, payment, invoice, waiver, contractual, accounting, and insurance records may be retained for the period reasonably required by law, our professional advisors, insurers, or legitimate business needs.

• Sensitive workshop logistics, health, accommodation, dietary, travel, and emergency information is deleted, anonymized, or reduced when it is no longer reasonably needed for workshop administration, safety, incident response, insurance, legal, or dispute purposes.

• Public comments may remain available until they are removed by us or the commenter, subject to platform functionality, moderation, legal obligations, and backup retention.

We may retain information for longer when needed to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims, investigate fraud or abuse, comply with a preservation request, or satisfy another legal obligation. We may also keep information in backups for a limited period before routine deletion or overwriting.

10. Information Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. Access is limited to Michael Rung, Jeffrey Tadlock, and service providers or professional advisors who reasonably need it for Shutter Nonsense business. We use account security measures such as strong passwords and multi-factor authentication where available.

No website, transmission method, or storage system is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, and you should use care when sending sensitive information online.

11. Your Choices and Privacy Rights

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have the right to:

To protect personal information, we may ask you to verify control of the email address associated with the record or provide limited additional information, such as the relevant workshop, registration date, or invoice number. We will request only information reasonably appropriate to verify the request.

An authorized representative may submit a request on your behalf, but we may require proof of authorization and may also verify your identity directly. We may deny or limit a request when permitted or required by law, when we cannot reasonably verify the request, or when fulfilling it would infringe the rights or safety of another person. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.

12. Children and Age Restrictions

The website and our services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we collected such information, we will take reasonable steps to delete it. A parent or guardian who believes a child under 13 submitted personal information may contact us at privacy@shutternonsense.com.
 

All Shutter Nonsense workshop participants must be 18 or older. Any future private alumni community or member forum will also be limited to people 18 or older.

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our business, services, technology, providers, advertising practices, or legal obligations. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the “Last Updated” date.
